Gold becomes a theme at glitzy Cannes amfAR gala

There's always glitz and glamour at Cannes, France, during its annual film festival, and it's no different this year. But there's still a heavy infusion of gold to come this week at Thursday's amfAR gala, which will treat its celebrity guests to 40 of the world's top models in "The Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show," curated by Carine Roitfeld.

It's the 20th edition of the gala, which raises money for AIDS research, and the "ultimate" show builds on a smaller one that launched last year. This time, Karlie Kloss, Karolina Kurkova, Angela Lindvall and Alessandra Ambrosio will be dripping in gold jewelry and wearing gleaming gowns by Giorgio Armani, Alexander Wang, Marchesa and Louis Vuitton, among others.

"It was really hard to choose a dress for this," said Eva Cavalli, who is donating a mermaid, sequin-covered gown from the Roberto Cavalli archive that Kurkova will wear to open the show.

"Gold for Cavalli is THE color: the color of sun, positivity, warmth, joy," said Cavalli, Roberto's wife and design partner. "But it was hard to choose for this. I also thought of gold leather, but I was thinking that I wanted to give something really special, and this is one of the most beautiful pieces we ever did."

Charity catwalks such as this add a little sense of competition among designers, she said, but "only because everyone wants to do more, give more and be involved more, but in a friendly way."

She bought a Valentino red gown at another amfAR event. "I've never worn it, but it looks good and maybe I will wear it someday."

Years ago, fashion wasn't a big part of the event ? or even the film festival, Roitfeld said, but there were so many beautiful dresses and so many beautiful faces that it was ripe to make a big, bold style statement. "It's so glamorous and generous at amfAR. Why not?"

Roitfeld, who usually has a uniform of black or khaki, said she'll wear gold, "which is a big deal for me."

She'll be mingling with Sharon Stone, Heidi Klum, Jessica Chastain and Harvey Weinstein, among others, and scheduled performers include Duran Duran, Shirley Bassey, Ellie Goulding and Hot Chelle Rae. The event will stream live at the Lovegold.com website.

"We had to make it more fun than other fashion shows. It's not all journalists and the people who go to fashion shows at Cannes. We have to entertain. ... It's more like a Victoria's Secret show, where they create the dream of women to have wings on their back. We're doing the same thing with our girls," Roitfeld said. "We're not there to sell the dress. The models are there more to flirt with the audience."

She added: "Charity is always a good excuse to mix people with models."

How to Create a ?Do-It-Yourself? Fund for Diversification

Monday, May 20th, 2013
By George Leong, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

How to Create a ?Do-It-Yourself? Fund for DiversificationThe stock market has only one direction in mind and that?s up. I sense there?s froth building up. This current market action reminds me a bit of what happened in 1999, but the situation is different in that interest rates are at record lows, the Federal Reserve is providing liquidity, and the valuation of stocks is much more reasonable versus that of 1999.

My concern is how far the stock market can rise before we see a correction of any significant magnitude. Yet even with selling, it would be a buying opportunity, not a sign to exit.

The one key thing you need to make sure of is that your portfolio is diversified to withstand any major selling in a particular sector and market cap. Case in point: if you were heavily weighted in the precious metals, such as gold and silver, your portfolio would have been devastated by now.

This doesn?t mean you shouldn?t have any metals in your portfolio, but you need to have ample diversification, which is the key to success in the stock market.

If your assets are well diversified, it would be fine to play a possible upside bounce in gold. (Read ?Is Gold?s Near-Beath Crisis Over-Exaggerated? Concerns of a Market Meltdown May Not Be.?)

The reality is that it doesn?t matter if you are investing in real estate, gold, stocks, art, or classic cars; the prudent way to protect your assets is to make sure you are diversified in the stock market.

The concept of spreading the investment risk is portfolio management?a process that encompasses the creation, monitoring, and adjustment of your investments. This process never stops, because you are continually buying and selling new stocks. Taking a portfolio approach to your stock market investments will help you improve your success.

When I refer to taking a ?portfolio approach? to your stock market holdings, it means diversifying your investments through different industries. Not only do you need to spread your investment capital around a number of different stocks, but you also need to diversify your holdings across different industries. Owning a basket of stocks in one market sector increases your investment risk substantially, so you have to spread your money around different sectors if you want to protect your wealth over the long term.

Make sure you have investments spread across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a good index to look at as far as diversification ideas.

You can create a ?do-it-yourself? fund by allocating your assets to various indices that will give you a broad measure of the stock market and allow for ample diversification. In this case, you can add a mixture of the Dow, S&P 500, NASDAQ, and Russell 2000 as the core holdings along with foreign exposure via exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

Russian TV: American accused of spying flies out

(AP) ? The U.S. Embassy employee accused of spying in Moscow flew out of Russia on Sunday, five days after he was ordered to leave the country, NTV television reported.

The Kremlin-loyal TV station broadcast video Sunday evening showing Ryan Fogle going through passport control and security at Sheremetyevo International Airport. He also was pictured in the company of embassy staff as he wheeled a suitcase into the Moscow airport, which is used by Delta Air Lines for its direct flights to New York.

Russian security services announced Tuesday that Fogle, a 29-year-old third secretary in the U.S. Embassy, had been caught trying to recruit a Russian counterterrorism officer. Fogle, who was accused of working for the CIA, was widely shown on Russian television wearing a blond wig.

The U.S. Embassy on Sunday again refused to comment on the case.

The attention given to the Fogle case in Russia contrasts with recent moves by Washington and Moscow to develop closer cooperation on counterterrorism in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15.

The bombing suspects ? Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his elder brother, Tamerlan, who was killed by police ? have roots in the Russian republic of Chechnya. Tamerlan spent six months last year in neighboring Dagestan, now the center of an Islamic insurgency, and U.S. investigators have been working with the Russians to try to determine whether he had established any contacts with the militants.

Little is known publicly about Fogle's duties and activities in Russia.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that Fogle worked as an embassy employee but would give no details about his job. The CIA declined comment.

Upmarket Pakistan district votes again as Imran Khan decries killing

By Katharine Houreld and Syed Raza Hassan

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - An upmarket constituency of Pakistan's violence-plagued city of Karachi voted again under tight security on Sunday, a day after gunmen killed a senior politician from a reformist party in the district and a week after general elections.

It was not immediately clear who killed Zara Shahid Hussain, a leading member of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) party of former cricket star Imran Khan.

Imran blamed the killing on the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) party, which has a stranglehold on the city. MQM leaders denied responsibility, condemned the killing and demanded a retraction from Imran.

The attack in the upscale Defence area, the family neighborhood of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, capped a bloody election campaign in which around 150 people were killed nationwide.

Last Saturday's elections handed a landslide victory to opposition leader Nawaz Sharif and his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

But results from a handful of constituencies across the country are still uncertain amid accusations of vote-rigging. There is re-polling in a few others where security issues prevented voting.

Last week's election gave the MQM 18 of 19 national assembly seats in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city. The constituency, known blandly as NA-250, where Sunday's re-poll is taking place is thought to be a stronghold of the PTI.

The re-vote took place at 43 of 180 polling stations. The MQM, which wanted re-polling of the whole constituency, boycotted the vote.

Whatever the result, Sharif's national landslide win is assured. But as Pakistan's financial center, Karachi generates around half of government revenues and stability in the city is key to stability of the whole country.

For the first time, each ballot box was guarded by a ranger and a soldier inside and outside the booths to ensure security and no violence had been reported by early afternoon.

CONTROVERSIAL PARTY

Police said that two gunmen shot Hussain on Saturday outside her home in Defence.

"Her death has sent shockwaves across the rank and file of the party," Khan said in a statement.

"I hold (MQM leader) Altaf Hussain directly responsible for the murder as he openly threatened PTI workers and leaders through public broadcasts," Imran, recovering in hospital from a fall during campaigning, added in a tweet.

"I also hold the British government responsible as I had warned them about British citizen Altaf Hussain after his open threats."

Altaf Hussain is accused of murder in Pakistan and leads his party remotely from exile in England. His party is designated a terrorist organization by Canada, a charge it strongly denies.

In recent days he gave a speech which many Pakistanis felt was an incitement to attack political rivals. British police are investigating whether or not it constituted a hate speech.

The MQM, a secular party, is locked in a battle with various rival contenders for influence in Karachi, including Pakistan's Taliban movement, which has sought to gain a foothold in various districts on the outskirts of the city in recent years.

Imran's election campaign electrified many Pakistanis, pushing the PTI from a marginal party to Pakistan's third largest.

Karachi, the nuclear-armed country's key port, is home to 18 million people. It typically sees about a dozen murders a day, a combination of political killings, attacks by the Pakistan Taliban and sectarian militant groups, and street crime.

Marco Rubio Makes His Move For 2016

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio hasn?t popped up in an early-primary state in six months, leaving potential Republican rivals like Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to make the rounds while he carried the torch for his immigration reform plan.

But while furiously working the talk show circuit to sell a bill viewed warily by many Republican voters, Rubio has been just as doggedly laying the groundwork for a successful presidential campaign in 2016.

Since he became the first possible contender in November to swoop into Iowa, which hosts the first nominating contest, Rubio?aired the first television ad from his Reclaim America leadership committee on behalf of Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, which traditionally votes second on the primary calendar;?formed a joint fundraising committee that makes it easier to collect big donations; and reversed his position on Florida?s presidential primary, greasing a?bill through the Legislature?that would ensure the state earns a full slate of convention delegates in 2016.

?It?s good for Florida?s favorite son,? said David Johnson, a former executive director of the Florida Republican Party. Asked if he meant Rubio, Johnson added, ?Any of Florida?s favorite sons, whether it?s Marco Rubio or (former Gov.) Jeb Bush on the ballot.?

Beyond the logistical moves, Rubio is latching onto issues that, unlike immigration reform, excite his conservative base. His latest and juiciest target: the IRS, for singling out tea party groups for special scrutiny.

?Rubio has gone full bore on the IRS,? said Republican consultant Keith Appell, who is active in the conservative movement. ??Immigration is a tough, tough fight he may not win, and these scandals are giving him a bit of a reprieve to talk about something else.?

Rubio was the first member of Congress to call for the resignation of the IRS chief, pre-empting President Obama?s first public comments on the controversy. Rubio followed up his demand Monday morning with a bill that would make it a crime for IRS employees to target political groups, a fiery speech on the Senate floor, and a flurry of television appearances in which he also condemned the administration?s response to the Benghazi attacks and the Justice Department?s seizure of journalists? phone records.

As the son of Cuban immigrants who saw their homeland taken over by a repressive regime, Rubio brings a personal fury to the scandals in Washington.

?These are the tactics of the Third World,? he said on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday. "These are the tactics of places that don?t have the freedoms and the independence that we have here in this country.?

Rubio?s leadership committee has sent out two e-mail blasts this week to capitalize on outrage over the IRS scandal. ?Your donation will ensure that we have the resources to take this fight to the highest levels possible,? the missive said. ?Together we?ll turn back the frightening tide of our rapidly expanding, unaccountable government.?

A second e-mail presented a petition protesting the IRS?s tactics. After submitting personal information, the web site sends supporters to a fundraising page for Reclaim America.

The IRS controversy adds to a growing portfolio that will help inoculate Rubio from being pigeonholed as the Hispanic senator who wants to allow 11 million illegal immigrants to earn citizenship. He?s sponsoring a bill called the ?Student Right to Know Before You Go Act,? which would help students get data about the costs of a college education. When he delivered the Republican response to the president?s State of the Union speech, he railed against the president?s health care law and tax hikes on the wealthy. Rubio rarely misses an opportunity to weigh in on an issue -- whether it?s Obama?s Cabinet appointments, the Internet sales tax, or the civil war in Syria ? and the media is always willing to oblige the charismatic political comer with a quote or a television hit.

?He?s leading on the immigration issue, and I?m grateful, but he?s also stacking one brick after another, and people down the road will see what he is doing,? said Florida Republican Party Chairman Lenny Curry. ?He?s leading on a lot of issues.?

And it was Rubio who quietly pushed Florida?s Republican?controlled Legislature to tack a last-minute change to a sweeping election bill, moving back Florida?s presidential primary so that it would comply with national party rules. The move came seven years after Rubio, then a rising star in the Florida Legislature, led the charge to move the state?s primary to its earliest date ever so that it would have the biggest impact on the nominating process.

?Florida is the microcosm of the entire nation,? Rubio told The Miami Herald in March 2006. ?With all due respect to New Hampshire and Iowa, nowhere are you going to be on a national stage like Florida.?

Rubio allies say he changed his mind because the national party ratcheted up the penalties for states that flouted its calendar. The winner of Florida?s 2016 presidential primary would have reaped only 12 delegates instead of 99 if the state kept its early primary in January or early February. (It received 50 in 2012.) Under the new law, the primary is expected to be in early March, depriving Florida of its early imprint on the race but ensuring it will make a big difference in the delegate count.

Rubio?s reversal earned him a ?full flop? from Politifact.

In addition to losing delegates, Florida was assigned a far-flung hotel even though the 2012 convention was held in Tampa, forcing participants to endure long bus rides to get to the event.

?We don?t want to have to go through the same mess we went through last year,? said Curry, the party chairman. ?I thought moving up the primary was a good idea because Florida ought to have a big voice given the size and diversity of our state, but it turned out to be a pretty painful process.?

About one week after Florida set the new primary date, Rubio?s Reclaim America organization began airing an ad defending Sen. Ayotte for voting against expanding background checks for gun buyers. The spot looks like a commercial for Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo, showing images of attractive mothers cuddling their babies before featuring Ayotte. ?Safety, security, family. No one understands these things like a mom, and no one works harder for them than this one.?

The "six-figure" media buy is noteworthy because until now, Rubio has spent much of his leadership committee money on political consultants, fundraising and direct mail.

Fergus Cullen, a former chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party and the founder of a pro-immigration reform group, noted that Ayotte will be a key vote on the bill. ?Maybe Sen. Rubio is just being a nice guy,? Cullen quipped. ?It?s a win-win-win. It?s good all around. It?s good for Rubio.?

Hangouts for iPhone and iPad review: Google+ cross-platform messaging service

Hangouts by Google for iPhone review

Hangouts for iPhone and iPad is Google's new cross-platform messaging app that lets you converse with your friends regardless of what phone, tablet, or computer they are using. It features a beautiful, clean design and support for video messaging.

The chat view in Hangouts is very traditional and flat with some subtle shading. Your messages and picture are on the right and everyone else is on the left. All users' chat bubbles are the same color, so only the picture distinguishes users from each other; something I actually like. It's simple

Tapping a user's photo will take you to their profile which includes everything they've made available on Google+, including work history, basic information, education, and more.

Video chatting with Hangouts is super easy, looks great, and also sounds crisp and clear. I had a quick conversation with Rene while he was in a noisy environment, yet I had no problem hearing or understanding him.

Google Hangouts also gives you control over who gets to hangout with you and who must send a request. You can also choose to automatically snooze notifications after 1-72 hours and block specific users.

The good

  • Clean design
  • Cross-platform
  • Group conversation support
  • Video chat support
  • Get notifications only once. After you see an alert, it disappears from other devices.
  • Snooze notifications
  • Save history
  • View collections of photos shared from each Hangout
  • Emoji support
  • Connect to Messages for Mac with Jabber
  • Universal for iPhone and iPad

The bad

  • Requires Google+, a simple Gmail account is not enough
  • Can't set your status/availability
  • No sound when new message comes in
  • No SMS integration. This is not a fault of Google, but rather of iOS API limitations, but it's still a bummer.

The bottom line

If you chat with friends on Google Talk or Google+ often, then Hangouts is awesome and you should definitely pick it up.

The look won't shock anyone keeping up with their spy videos, although Porsche's formal unveiling helps firm up the specifications that customers will get if they've dutifully shelled out $845,000. The performance is even more intimidating than it was in 2011, we know that much: there's 887HP of combined V8 and plug-in electric power, a 0-62MPH time of 2.8 seconds and up to 18 miles of gas-free driving. About the only disappointment (price notwithstanding) is the lack of options beyond a weight reduction package. We doubt many Spyder buyers will complain when they can even outrace a 911 GT3.

Weizmann Institute researchers and their colleagues set an upper limit for the thickness of jet streams on Uranus and Neptune

What is the long-range weather forecast for the giant planets Uranus and Neptune? These planets are home to extreme winds blowing at speeds of over 1000 km/hour, hurricane-like storms as large around as Earth, immense weather systems that last for years and fast-flowing jet streams. Both planets feature similar climates, despite the fact that Uranus is tipped on its side with the pole facing the sun during winter. The winds on these planets have been observed on their outer surfaces; but to get a grasp of their weather systems, we need to have an idea of what is going on underneath. For instance, do the atmospheric patterns arise from deep down in the planet, or are they confined to shallower processes nearer the surface? New research at the Weizmann Institute of Science, the University of Arizona and Tel Aviv University, which was published online Thursday in Nature, shows that the wind patterns seen on the surface can extend only so far down on these two worlds.

Understanding the atmospheric circulation is not simple for a planet without a solid surface, where Earth-style boundaries between solid, liquid and gas layers do not exist. Since the discovery of these strong atmospheric winds in the 1980s by the Voyager II spacecraft, the vertical extent of these winds has been a major puzzle one that influences our understanding of the physics governing the atmospheric dynamics and internal structure of these planets. But a team led by Dr. Yohai Kaspi of the Weizmann Institute's Environmental Sciences and Energy Research Department realized they had a way, based on a novel method for analyzing the gravitational field of the planets, to determine an upper limit for the thickness of the atmospheric layer.

Deviations in the distribution of mass in planets cause measurable fluctuations in the gravitational field. On Earth, for example, an airplane flying near a large mountain feels the slight extra gravitational pull of that mountain. Like Earth, the giant planets of the solar system are rapidly rotating bodies. In fact all of them rotate faster than Earth; the rotation periods of Uranus and Neptune are about 17 and 16 hours, respectively. Because of this rapid rotation, the winds swirl around regions of high and low pressure. (In a non-rotating body, flow would be from high to low pressure.) This enables researchers to deduce the relations between the distribution of pressure and density, and the planets' wind field. These physical principles enabled Kaspi and his co-authors to calculate, for the first time, the gravity signature of the wind patterns and thus create a wind-induced gravity map of these planets.

By computing the gravitational fields of a large range of ideal planet models ones with no wind a task conducted by team member Dr. Ravit Helled of Tel Aviv University and comparing them with the observed gravitational fields, upper limits to the meteorological contribution to the gravitational fields were obtained. This enabled Kaspi's team, which included Profs. Adam Showman and Bill Hubbard of the University of Arizona, and Prof. Oded Aharonson of the Weizmann Institute, to show that the streams of gas observed in the atmosphere are limited to a "weather-layer" of no more than about 1000 km in depth, which makes up only a fraction of a percent of the mass of these planets.

Although no spacecraft missions to Uranus and Neptune are planned for the near future, Kaspi anticipates that the team's findings will be useful in the analysis of another set of atmospheric circulation patterns that will be closely observed soon: those of Jupiter. Kaspi, Helled and Hubbard are part of the science team of NASA's Juno spacecraft to Jupiter. Juno was launched in 2011; upon reaching Jupiter in 2016 it will provide very accurate measurements of the gravity field of this giant gaseous planet. Using the same methods as the present study, Kaspi anticipates that they will be able to obtain the same type of information they acquired for Uranus and Neptune: namely, placing constraints on the depth of the atmospheric dynamics of this planet.

Uranus and Neptune are the farthest planets in the solar system, and there are still many open questions regarding their formation and composition. This study has implications for revealing the mysteries of their deep, dark interiors, and may even provide information about how these planets were formed. Moreover, many of the extrasolar planets detected around other stars have been found to have similar masses to those of Uranus and Neptune, so this research will be important for understanding like-sized extrasolar planets, as well.

Prof. Oded Aharonson's research is supported by the Helen Kimmel Center for Planetary Science, which he heads; the J & R Center for Scientific Research; and the estate of Joseph and Erna Lazard.

Exclusive: Roche exploring sale of diabetes device unit

By Jessica Toonkel

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG is exploring a sale of its blood glucose meters business, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday, as the industry grapples with increased competition and reimbursement pressure.

The discussions about a potential sale of the Roche unit are still in their early stages and a deal may not materialize, one of the people said.

Earlier this year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced it was cutting the reimbursement for diabetes test supplies by up to 72 percent. That would make it more difficult for companies to be profitable in this space, said another of the sources.

The change takes effect July 1.

It could not be learned how much the Roche unit was worth. All the sources wished to remain anonymous because the matter is not public. A Roche spokesman declined to comment.

Last year, Bayer AG, Germany's biggest drugmaker, attempted to sell its blood glucose meter business for around $1.5 billion, only to pull the plug on the sale early this year after failing to find sufficient buyer interest.

There are only a handful of companies that sell blood glucose meters, including Medtronic Inc and Johnson & Johnson, that would make logical buyers, two of the people said.

Cambodian shoe factory collapse kills 2, injures 7

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? The ceiling of a Cambodian factory that makes Asics sneakers collapsed on workers early Thursday, killing two people and injuring seven, in the latest accident to spotlight lax safety conditions in the global garment industry.

About 50 workers were inside the factory, south of the capital Phnom Penh, when the ceiling caved in, said police officer Khem Pannara. He said heavy iron equipment stored on the floor above appeared to have caused the collapse.

Two bodies were pulled from the wreckage and seven people were injured, he said. Rescuers combed through rubble for several hours and after clearing the site said that nobody else was trapped inside.

"We were working normally and suddenly several pieces of brick and iron started falling on us," said an injured 25-year-old Kong Thary, crying on the telephone as she recounted the scene from a nearby clinic.

Chea Muny, chief of a trade union for factory workers, identified the factory as a Taiwanese-owned operation called Wing Star that produces Asics sneakers for the Japanese sportswear label. He said shoes made at the factory were imported to the United States and Europe.

The factory complex, which opened about a year ago, consists of several buildings. The structure where the collapse occurred was mainly used as a storage warehouse for shoe-production equipment but had a small work area where people were gathered when the collapse occurred, Chea Muny said.

The garment industry is Cambodia's biggest export earner. In 2012, more than $4 billion worth of products were shipped to the United States and Europe.

About 500,000 people work in more than 500 garment and shoe factories throughout the country.

The accident comes about three weeks after a building collapse in Bangladesh that killed 1,127 people in the global garment industry's deadliest disaster. Bangladesh is the third-biggest exporter of clothes in the world, after China and Italy.

"This shows that the problem is not only isolated to Bangladesh, and that companies (elsewhere) are trying to drive prices down by taking shortcuts on workers' safety," said Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch.

How your tea party group got on the IRS' 'BOLO' list

Screen shot from the inspector general report

This screen shot is taken from an official review of the Internal Revenue Service's practices for determining which groups were eligible for tax-exempt status between 2010 and 2012.

The report, written by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and obtained by Yahoo News on Tuesday, details missteps the IRS took in targeting certain political groups for additional scrutiny.

The audit confirms previous reports that the IRS flagged applications from organizations that used words like "tea party" and "patriots" in their title. Even groups that said they wanted to advocate for making "America a better place to live" were placed on a "Be On the Look Out," or BOLO, list.

From the report:

In May 2010, the Determinations Unit began developing a spreadsheet that would become known as the ?Be On the Look Out? listing (hereafter referred to as the BOLO listing), which included the emerging issue of Tea Party applications. In June 2010, the Determinations Unit began training its specialists on issues to be aware of, including Tea Party cases. By July 2010, Determinations Unit management stated that it had requested its specialists to be on the lookout for Tea Party applications.

In "many" cases, the report said, organizations put on the list had to wait more than two years to receive notice from the IRS on the status of their applications.

Apple Is Hiring Up For iWork - Business Insider

When Apple introduced the iPad in 2009, it rolled out its own suite of Microsoft Office-like applications.

It had "Pages" for word processing, "Numbers" for spreadsheets, and "Keynote" for presentations. Since Microsoft never rolled out a version of Office for the iPad, each of those three apps sold well for Apple.

Pages is the most popular paid app of all-time. Keynote is the tenth most popular and Numbers is eleventh.

After Apple introduced those apps in 2009, it's largely left them alone. There have been some minor tweaks, but nothing major.

That could be about to change.

Apple has been hiring people for iWork, which is the division that houses those apps, since February, says MacRumors. Early on it was hiring senior software engineers. Now its hiring quality assurance engineers, which suggests its getting closer to having a new, finished product for testing.

Since it doesn't look like Microsoft is going to make Office for iPad any time soon, it makes sense for Apple to polish these apps. They're still popular for people buying their first iPad, and there are a lot of people still buying their first iPads.

One semi-related note: It's interesting that Google hasn't built great Google Drive apps for the iPad. Google's spreadsheet and word-processing apps should have been great native iPad apps a long time ago.

Perhaps the reason Google and Microsoft skipped the iPad is that 1. it's mostly a consumption device, and 2. they don't want to strengthen Apple's iPad business.

BlackBerry Q5: a QWERTY handset built for emerging markets

BlackBerry Q5: a QWERTY handset built for emerging markets

This morning at BlackBerry Live in Orlando, Thorsten Heins kicked off the company's major annual event with a brief mention of the latest BB10 device, the Q5. It's a handset Heins is convinced will be a "big hit" for its target audience. The portrait QWERTY handset follows in the footsteps of the recently unleashed Q10, merging a 3.1-inch touch screen with hardware keyboard, but has a more specific bent: it's made for emerging markets. Due to be launched in a trio of colors (i.e., black, red and pink), the Q5 is being positioned as a low-end device that combines affordability, BB's signature physical keyboard and, of course, BB10. It's due to rollout this July in Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia. As for pricing, the company's remaining mum on that end, but with summer fast approaching, we should know soon enough.

Tougher drunken driving threshold weighed

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal accident investigators were weighing a recommendation Tuesday that states reduce their threshold for drunken driving from the current .08 blood alcohol content to .05, a standard that has been shown to substantially reduce highway deaths in other countries.

The lower threshold was one of a series of recommendations aimed at reducing drunken driving made by the National Transportation Safety Board's staff in a report presented at a meeting of the board.

New approaches are needed to combat drunken driving, which claims the lives of more than a third of the people killed each year on U.S highways ? a level of carnage that that has remained stubbornly consistent for the past decade and a half, the board said.

"Our goal is to get to zero deaths because each alcohol-impaired death is preventable," NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said. "Alcohol-impaired deaths are not accidents, they are crimes. They can and should be prevented. The tools exist. What is needed is the will."

Dramatic progress was made in the 1980s through the mid-1990s after the minimum drinking age was raised to 21 and the legally-allowable maximum level of drivers' blood alcohol content was lowered to .08, the report said. Today, drunken driving claims about 10,000 lives a year, down from over 18,000 in 1982. At that time, alcohol-related fatalities accounted for about 40 percent of highway deaths.

But progress in cutting the rate further has largely stagnated, and board members have called for a fresh approach.

Technology may be part of the solution, and anti-drunken driving forces have talked of turning cars into a part of the solution.

In December, the board called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the auto industry to step up their research into technology for use in all vehicles that can detect whether a driver has elevated blood alcohol without the driver breathing into a tube or taking any other action. Drivers with elevated levels would be unable to start their cars.

But the technology is still years away.

A combination of approaches will be needed to effectively drive down fatalities, researchers told the board at a two-day forum on drunk driving last year.

Reducing the blood alcohol limit below .08 could save over 7,000 lives a year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has estimated.

Australia saw a 12 percent decline in alcohol-related deaths as a share of overall traffic fatalities when it lowered its legal limit to .05. The limit in most of Europe is also .05, and in some countries it's as low as .02.

A woman weighing less than 120 pounds can reach .05 after just one drink. A man weighing up to 160 pounds reaches .05 after two drinks.

A recommendation made by researchers last year has been to expand the use of alcohol ignition interlock devices by drivers convicted of driving under the influence. The devices usually require a driver to breathe into a tube, much like the breathalyzers police ask suspected drunken drivers to use.

Expanded use of high visibility checkpoints by police has also been recommended.

Canon 5D Mark III now captures 24 fps RAW video thanks to Magic Lantern firmware add-on (update: Mark II also)

Canon 5D Mark III now captures 24fps RAW video thanks to Magic Lantern firmware add-on

It's no secret that Canon's 5D Mark III is the go-to DSLR for videographers the world over, but things are about to become a whole lot more interesting. The people behind Magic Lantern have successfully coaxed the 5D Mark III into shooting 24 fps RAW video at resolutions up to 1,920 x 820 pixels using 1000x speed cards. If you're not familiar with Magic Lantern, it's an open source firmware add-on that brings additional functionality to Canon EOS cameras. The ability to capture RAW video at 24 fps improves dynamic range and resolution -- it also provides extra flexibility during post-production. According to the team at Magic Lantern, more work is required before the feature is ready to be deployed. So until then, you're invited to follow the link below and watch the RAW vs. H.264 videos after the break.

Update: We just received news from Magic Lantern that Canon's Mark II is now also a go for 24 fps with the new firmware. Nic from the development team said "After some further testing it is clear the older, cheaper Mark II should be able to record at least resolutions of 1880x840 in full-frame mode (with line skipping)."

4 killed in Indiana home were couple and 2 friends

WAYNESVILLE, Ind. (AP) ? Authorities said Sunday that four people found shot to death in a southern Indiana home were a couple who lived there and two of their male friends.

Daniel Burton, the 27-year-old son of the woman who was killed, arrived home from work Saturday night and found two of the victims dead in the living room of his Waynesville home, Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett said. He said Burton called police, who found the other two victims, including Burton's 53-year-old mother, Katheryn Burton.

"We still have crime scene techs and criminal investigators at the scene and anticipate them being there for quite a length of time," Gorbett said. "We are following up on all leads at this point and we have no one in custody at this time."

Authorities identified the others who were killed as Katheryn Burton's longtime boyfriend, 39-year-old Thomas Smith, who also lived at the home, and two 41-year-old Columbus men, Aaron Cross and Shawn Burton. The coroner said the Columbus men were friends of the couple, but were not related to them. Waynesville is a few miles south of Columbus.

Gorbett said the three men were found dead in the living room and that Katheryn Burton was found dead in a bedroom.

When asked by reporters for additional information on Sunday, Gorbett said, "Quadruple homicide."

The Rev. Gary Carroll, pastor at Waynesville Chapel Mercy Missionary Baptist Church about a half-block from the home, told The (Columbus, Ind.) Republic that he had no indication there had been trouble at the home until he saw the flashing lights Saturday night.

Carroll, who lives next door to the church, said he knew the residents of the home only in passing ? enough to wave when he saw them. He said they seemed like nice people.

Beverly Nichols told the newspaper she mowed the grass for a friend directly across the street from home on Saturday afternoon and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

NASA waits to see if space station coolant leak is fixed after spacewalk

Astronaut helmet camera captures video of NASA engineers Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn replacing a pump on International Space Station suspected of leaking ammonia.

By Tariq Malik, Space.com

Two spacewalking astronauts may have fixed an ammonia leak outside the International Space Station on Saturday, perhaps bringing the outpost's vital cooling system back up to full strength.

Clad in bulky spacesuits, NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn replaced a pump control box thought to be responsible for the?leak of ammonia, which cools down the orbiting lab's systems. It looks like this fix did the trick, as no ammonia flakes were seen streaming into space when Mission Control turned on the newly installed gear.

"We're not seeing anything," Cassidy said at around 12:35 p.m. ET, several minutes after the pump was turned on. "No snow." [Emergency Spacewalk to Fix Space Station Leak in Photos]

NASA officials stopped short of declaring total victory, however, saying that time will tell if the fix holds.

"It will take some diagnostics, still, over the course of the next several days by the thermal systems specialists to fully determine that we have solved the problem of the?ammonia leak,"?NASA spokesperson Rob Navias?said during live mission commentary. "But so far, so good."?

An emergency spacewalk?
Cassidy and Marshburn floated outside the space station at 8:44 a.m. ET Saturday, beginning what officials described as a six-hour detective's investigation to find ? and hopefully fix ? the ammonia leak.

Cassidy, who led the spacewalk, reported seeing "no smoking gun" as he and Marshburn began their inspection of the old ammonia pump control box, one of several on the space station's far left segment, known as the Port 6 truss. It is part of the cooling system for the two wing-like solar arrays extending from the Port 6 segment.

Upon removing the box, the spacewalkers still saw no signs of ammonia flakes.

"It looks really, really clean, surprisingly so," Cassidy said while peering deep inside the box using what looked like a dentist's mirror.

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy (striped spacesuit) holds an ammonia pump control box during a spacewalk to hunt for an ammonia leak outside the International Space Station on May 13, 2013. The spacesuit of astronaut Tom Marshburn can be seen behind him.

Flakes of ammonia were discovered leaking out of the cooling system on International Space Station, and two astronauts are taking a spacewalk to repair it. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

The ammonia leak was first spotted by space station astronauts last Thursday, when the crew reported seeing flakes of frozen coolant floating outside. They recorded video of the ammonia leak and sent it down to Mission Control for analysis.

While the leak posed no danger to the space station's crew, it could have impacted the amount of power available for daily operations on the orbiting laboratory if left unchecked, NASA officials said. So Cassidy and Marshburn were sent out on an emergency spacewalk to attempt a fix.

The roughly 48-hour turnaround made this the?fastest spacewalk plan of its kind?ever devised for a space station crew, mission managers have said.

By about 1:00 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT), a little more than four hours into the spacewalk, Cassidy and Marshburn were getting ready to head back to a space station airlock, where they must clean their spacesuits to make sure they don't bring any toxic ammonia into the orbiting lab.

A history of ammonia leaks
This is not the first time astronauts have had to tackle ammonia leaks in the?space station's cooling system?during a spacewalk.

Last year, astronauts Sunita Williams of NASA and Akihiko Hoshide of Japan performed a spacewalk to fix a leak that was also found on the Port 6 truss. That ammonia leak was in the same coolant loop as the current leak, but engineers do not yet know if the two leaks are related.

The station's Port 6 truss is the oldest piece of the space station's scaffolding-like backbone and carries two of the outpost's eight wing-like solar arrays. It launched in November 2000 and was originally installed on the station's roof, towering over the orbiting lap. In 2007, visiting shuttle astronauts relocated the P6 truss to its final location on the station's far left side.

This was the fourth spacewalk for both Marshburn and Cassidy, and the 168th total to support space station assembly and maintenance. Inside the?International Space Station, commander Chris Hadfield of Canada and Russian cosmonauts Roman Romanenko, Alexander Misurkin and Pavel Vinogradov followed the spacewalkers' progress.

Today's spacewalk comes just two days before Hadfield, Marshburn and Romanenko are due to return to Earth to end their five-month mission in space.

The three men are due to leave the space station on Monday and land on the steppes of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Those plans are still going forward, space station mission managers said.
