If the 2013 Joel Barlow High boys golf team is going to count on one group of players in particular it is not without good reason.
The Falcons, who again have 12 players on their roster, will be a senior-dominated team with eight. All their varsity experience rests with them as the rest are freshmen.
Due to less than ideal weather early in the pre-season and course conditions at Redding Country Club the Falcons could not get onto the fairways until last week. They did, however, go to a driving range once and since then have been able to play on the course with temporary greens.
?We have not had a chance to putt yet, so that?s a concern at this point,? said first-year head coach Steve Antal. He succeeds Jim Dolan, who led the team for 12 seasons and its lone South-West Conference championship in 2010 before retiring.
Antal inherits a team with a solid foundation. Going 10-6 overall last season, the Falcons finished fifth at the South-West Conference tournament.
They fared better at the state Division III tournament, placing third overall.
The Falcons graduated only two golfers since then, Anthony Pantalena and Steve Riccio. The former often finished in Barlow?s top five spots.
The rest of the scorers are back and should play key roles this season. Among their more experienced golfers are seniors Robbie Frierson, Max Hayes and Mason Mobilio.
Frierson was the only Barlow player named to the All-State and All-SWC teams. Hayes and Mobilio were both named All-Patriot Division selections. The former often posted Barlow?s best score in matches.
Kyle Rivard and Andrew Bindelglass also appeared in varsity matches last season and are back as well. Other seniors include Ryan Holder, Connor Murphy and Parker Rowberry.
The Falcons will have four freshmen on the team, Liam Rego, Jake Sullivan, Kain Upson and Vic Verner. Time will tell if they can make an impact this season
No matter who is in the lineup the Falcons will face some tough competition in the SWC this season. Antal expects defending champ Pomperaug and Weston, which was runner-up last season, to be the top two teams in the league.
He also expects his team to be competitive. The Falcons hope to qualify for the league and state tournaments again this season. They play their first match this week.
