No South African in Jayawardene-led ICC T20I XI ? Cricket News Update

After dominating ICC?s Test Team of the Year, South Africa failed to get even a single representation in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) team of the World T20 tournament, announced at the conclusion of the latest edition of the global event, in Sri Lanka, on Monday.

A five-member ICC panel selected the team, which includes three Sri Lankan players, the governing body said in a statement on Monday. Sri Lanka?s outgoing skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who was the leading run getter for his country in the T20 showpiece, has been named as the skipper of the ICC?s T20I XI.

West Indies lifted the coveted trophy after defeating the hosts by 36 runs in the tournament final, in front of a disappointed jam-packed crowd at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, on Sunday, October 7, 2012. This was Sri Lanka?s fourth successive defeat in a World Cup final over the last five years, and the home skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who was part of all the four squads, announced to quit T20 captaincy, shortly after the defeat.

The T20 Champions have got two representations in the team, in swashbuckling left-handed opener Chris Gayle and his Jamaican teammate Marlon Samuels. Player of the tournament Shane Watson and left-arm pace bowler Mitchell Starc are the two Australian players in the team.

Talismanic West Indies batsman Chris Gayle and veteran Australian all-rounder Shane Watson were named openers in the team. Explosive Jamaican batsman, who was the star of the final?s night, Marlon Samuels, India?s Virat Kohli, skipper Mahela Jayawardene and England?s Luke Wright filled up the middle order slots.

Sri Lanka?s limited-overs specialist Lasith Malinga and left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc comprise the pace attack, while wily Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal and Ajantha Mendis of Sri Lanka are the two spin bowlers named in the side.

New Zealand?s hard-hitting wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum has been given the role to keep the wickets.

ICC T20I Team: Chris Gayle (West Indies), Shane Watson (Australia), Virat Kohli (India), Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka - captain), Luke Wright (England), Brendon McCullum (New Zealand), Marlon Samuels (West Indies), Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka), Mitchell Starc (Australia), Saeed Ajmal (Pakistan), Ajantha Mendis (Sri Lanka)
